STORY: Wakya is based on a member of the Potraj community and his struggle to ensure a better life for his son.

REVIEW: Potrajs belong to a community that has been ill-treated by the society when it comes to betterment in their situation. Wakya aims to bring this very bit into focus and does so through the story of Ghumya (Kulkarni) who makes a living by seeking alms in the name of Goddess mariaai.

Though hesitant, Ghumya follows the family tradition as he is told by his father (Dutt) that Goddess Mariaai's service is the community's only aim. However, Ghumya doesn't want his son to follow suit and instead wants him to study. But he is deterred by the villagers who don't want a 'beggar's son' to go to school. A landlord (Yadav) from the village comes forth and offers money to Ghumya under the pretext of helping him. But the landlord has his eyes set on Ghumya's wife (Dnyanlaxmi)

The hypocrisy of the society is evident from the story and it's something we've seen in quite a few films before. The National Award winning Dhag and the acclaimed Fandry showed the plight of such communities through engaging stories and execution. Wakya, which has a good subject, fails on that front.

The plot goes haywire and the substandard performances don't do anything to salvage the film. The lead actor, Kulkarni, shows conviction and should be appreciated for his sincerity but the supporting cast, including Yadav who gets the typecast villain's role, fail to generate interest.

In the end, Wakya becomes the film that could've been watchable had it been executed properly.
